"The pass to Mazaros up from the rolling Verisian foothills was high and steep, and all but the hardiest travelers were compelled to switchback two score times during the whole of the rapid ascent. Amongst the wars of the Taldians and the successor lords of Blackstone, the pass was often sealed with ugly walls of dark wood and rock, and the violence of the siege of Uthanan and fall of Blackstone turned the whole pass and valley into a morass of blood and mud. But the short peace of Demetrius, St. Morninglory and the last ninja saw a reprieve to these devastations. Instead of grim walls, St. Morninglory defended the pass with labyrinthine barriers of impassable weeds of nature, and in the first days of summer the ancient winsome beauty of the Mazarosian valley would blossom under the pale sun."
