Fain’s Eternance is an artifact vorpal bastard sword +5 of wounding, wielded by Thezorus Kamanshar.

History

A new weapon given to Thezorus, it was devised by a wizard known only as Fain, an immortal sorcerer of tremendous powers and former possessor of the Orb of Red Dragon Kind. Several years before the start of the War of Siblings, Thezorus sought out this wizard with some of his most powerful lieutenants, all agents of nearly unbelievable power. Fain’s fortress at the crown of the world was assaulted. Thezorus was the only one of the party to survive. From the ruins he took the most wickedly powerful sword on the Earth.

Appearance

The sword is a cold, iron black, and is cold wrought iron. It is of normal size for a bastard sword. The hilt is crafted of the black bones of a dead god. A dull red gem of some sort lies embedded on one side of the hilt, and the pommel possesses an opaque, marmaceous crystal which glows in moonlight. The faces of dragons rim the top of the wrist guard, and of their tails the hilt is crafted.

Powers

The sword acts as a vorpal and “wounding” sword. The sword ignores all armor, magical bonuses excepted. Also, all magical blades and armor must roll saving throws versus crushing blow each time they come into violent contact with this sword or they are destroyed. Normal items are always destroyed upon contact with it if the blows are violent. The sword damages defensive spells, weakening such magic so that it will be dispelled upon a number of strikes by the sword equal to the spell’s level. Prismatic walls require a set of strikes from the sword for each layer to the spell. The sword can rebound spells such as magic missile upon successful parries versus the THAC0 of the spell caster, calculated as if the magic user were a warrior. The sword inflicts regular damage upon skeletal undead and undead that suffer half damage from physical attacks.

Curse

The sword is insanely corrupting, driving its wielder slowly and utterly to acts of chaotic evil. Kamanshar’s will however is indomitable, and has not yet fell full sway to the sword. In fact, the sword is utterly his to command.

Suggested Means of Destruction

Find the bones of the lich Fain, grind them up and sprinkle them on the blade. Then speak the words to every spell used to enchant the blade, but backwards and in order. Follow this with a disjunction spell and two wishes, one to destroy the blade and one to banish Fain forever to the Abyss.
